About the CPE

The Center on Pacific Economies (CPE) and the Pacific Leadership Fellows Program are based at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at UC San Diego. Under the leadership of Professor Gordon Hanson, the CPE and the Pacific Leadership Fellows Program bring together the worlds of academic inquiry and policy analysis. Through applied research and dialogue with government and business leaders, the CPE is a resource for policymakers. The center draws upon the strengths of UC San Diego’s schools of international affairs, management, engineering, science, and medicine.

The CPE examines why countries in the Pacific region, the Americas, and Asia differ in their ability to maintain sustainable growth, financial stability, technological innovation, and economic equity. The center also supports research into how collective action can be achieved on issues of common concern such as innovation, the environment, and flows of trade and investment. The Pacific Leadership Fellows Program creates connections by bringing political and economic leaders from throughout the Pacific to the center to work on projects that form the basis for policy dialogues. Together, the center and its programs enhance our region’s capabilities in world affairs.
