A successful television broadcaster before entering politics, Ms. Koike has been a cabinet minister five times, with positions as Environment and Defense Minister in both governing LDP party governments as well as in other opposition party governments before she joined the LDP. She has also been one of the leading proponents of the environmental movement in Japan.
