China - Shanghai

Photo Description: This photo was taken in downtown Shanghai one scorching hot day in the summer of 2006 at a Uyghur Muslim bakery and lamb kabob restaurant just a few blocks away from the Jane Goodall Institute Shanghai Roots & Shoots office where I was interning. Those sticks are for skewering the lamb kabobs to cook over open coals (a common sight in China, especially after the sun goes down and everyone is on the streets). I caught the chefs lounging in their wooden and rattan chairs on the side of the street. Check out the stacks of naan in the back right. Delicious! And at less than a quarter a loaf, probably one of the best bargains on any side of the Pacific!
