Brazil
Photo Description: Silves, Brazil, 2005On a weekend in September, we drove from Manaus, the large industrial capital of Amazonas state, to Silves, a small river island town reached after two hours on unpaved roads and finally a very small ferry. Silves is known for its sustainable extraction of Pau Rosa (Rosewood) oil and I was curious to see these operations and the town, especially since logging companies were lobbying to have the dirt road paved soon. This was the town’s only church and most colorful building, even standing out on the skyline upon arrival.
