"Beyond Diplomatic Channels: Building Partnerships for the 21st Century"
The importance of Indonesia’s democratic transition over the past ten years is difficult to overstate. More people have moved to democracy during these past ten years in Indonesia than any other country in the world. Yet challenges remain: high poverty rates, low investment in health and education, and rising income inequality.
Ambassador Hume will discuss how the United States will need to look beyond traditional diplomatic channels and engage non-government, private sector actors to advance U.S. foreign policy priorities in the 21st century. The rule of law, education, and re-ordering economic priorities are three key “tipping points” for U.S. engagement over the coming years.
