November 19, 2008
6:30 - 8 p.m.
Location: San Diego Museum of Art, Balboa Park
Open to: Public
Please join us at 6:30 p.m. for a reception at the San Diego Museum of Art, followed by a public lecture at 7 p.m. featuring Pacific Leadership Fellow Jaime Laya.
Laya, an avid art collector, will discuss the building of missions and their significance in modern society, using examples from his own involvement in the restoration of an 18th-century church in Manila. Laya will address the architecture of the church, its similarities to Spanish missions in California, and the challenges of preserving cultural heritage in modern cities. The talk will be followed by a conversation among Laya, IR/PS Dean Peter Cowhey, and Derrick Cartwright, executive director of the San Diego Museum of Art.
Jaime Laya has written numerous essays in his native country, the Philippines, on the value of art and culture. He will bring his admiration for restoration and beauty to the museum as he shares his perspective on missions in San Diego and beyond.
